My Leadership Experience
Although I work efficiently on my own, teams under me thrive, and I thrive as part of a team. My ability to recognize team members' strengths has enabled me to construct brands from the ground up, launch products, and lead a startup to acquisition. At AdColony, I took on the role of marketing leader, and despite losing my team due to budget constraints, I am proud of my intern's progression from intern to a full-time content marketer and then to a client success manager within DT's brand organization after the acquisition. Additionally, two members of my team joined directly through referrals, demonstrating their trust in my leadership and growth capabilities. As I write this website content, it's been challenging for me to avoid using "we" when discussing successes and only use "I" when taking responsibility for mistakes. I believe that wins belong to the team and that mistakes belong to the leader.
My Approach
I am not a micromanager. I've led writers, designers, and sales teams. I know how to motivate and foster growth, and I genuinely care about the career prospects of my team. I will never ask someone to do something if I don’t understand their own strengths and weaknesses, and where I might be needed to support, and how I can support them.
In my experience, the best way to fail as a leader is to worry too much about what each part of the team is doing. I let everyone do their job. I’m transparent. I expect everyone to over-communicate what they (and I) are doing, and wait for someone else to return the favour; refrain from demanding updates. Let them get on with their job. Sometimes that communication is Monday/Airtable/etc., sometimes it’s a sync, sometimes it’s just Slack, but it happens.
Conversely, make yourself available to help. Big stools have crossbeams between the legs. "Hey, you know where to find me if you need anything" is one of my favourite phrases. It's an open, friendly invitation to ask for help.
